Elisa Bonaparte was the sister of Napoleon and he created this principality for her on territories controlled by the French Empire. Elisa was the ruling princess, her husband was just prince in title. The principality adopted the French currency. Later it was incorporated in the Duchy of Tuscany and stood under direct French rule, although it never was a Departement of France. It was dissolved by the Congress of Vienna after the defeat of Napoleon.
