Lot 882:
India. AR Silver Token, imitating the Venetian Zecchino, c. 16th/18th century. 1.11 g. 24.00 mm. EF. India had cultural contacts with Italy, particularly during the Vijayanagara period, which continued up to the 18th century. Venetians were known to purchase spices and other commodities from India, paying with Venetian coins. Consequently, these coins gained popularity among the people of Maharashtra, who fashioned them into necklaces or used them as pendants. To meet local demand, goldsmiths crafted several imitations, which became popular as currency from the 18th century onward.
