Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD). AR Denarius, Lugdunum mint, c. 2 BC-4 AD. Obv. CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE. Laureate head right. Rev. AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT/ C. L. CAESARES (in exergue). Caius and Lucius Caesars standing facing, two shields and two spears between them; above, on left, simpulum right, and on right, lituus left. RIC I (2nd ed.) 207. 3.78 g. 19.00 mm. VF/GoodVF. Caius and Lucius, depicted on the reverse of this denarius, were adopted by Augustus as his successors. Neither survived the first emperor, dying very young, one in AD 2 and the other in AD 3. Augustus later adopted Tiberius as his successor.
