Julius Caesar. AR Denarius, Spain, 46-45 BC. Obv. Head of Venus right, wearing diadem; Cupid on shoulder. Rev. Trophy with oval shield and carnyx in each hand; on left, seated female captive; on right, bearded captive seated with hands tied back; in exergue, CAESAR. Cr. 468/1; B. (Julia) 11. 3.56 g. 18.50 mm. Banker's mark on the obverse. About VF. The minting of this denarius was part of the civil war between Caesar and Pompeius. In April 49 BC, Hispania was ruled by three of Pompeius's legates: Lucius Aphranius, Marcus Petreius and Marcus Terentius Varro Reatine, with seven legions. Caesar defeated them and allowed the Pompeians to choose between enlisting in his ranks or settling in Hispania as civilians or finally being discharged once they returned to the Varo river on the border between Provence and Italy.
