Elagabalus (218-222). AR Denarius, c. 221-222 AD. Obv. IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG. Laureate, draped and curiassed bust right, with horn over forehead. Rev. SVMMVS SACERDOS AVG. Elagabalus standing left, sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar and holding branch; in left field, star. RIC IV 146. 3.46 g. 18.50 mm. Lightly toned. Good VF/VF. Elagabalus was born at Emesa in 204 AD. As a child, he was elevated as the high priest of the Syro-Phoenician sun god Elagabus or Heliogabalus, and later became known by this name.
