Germany. AR Taler 1796, Contributionstaler type, H G B H. KM 288; Dav. 2229. 28.78 g. 41 mm. With suspension loop. Good VF. On July 16th 1796, the army of the French Republic occupied Frankfurt, seizing seven councilors as hostages. To secure their release, the French demanded a payment of 6 million francs in cash and 2 million francs in supplies. This type of 'contributionstaler' was minted to help to cover the ransom.
