Lot 918:
Greece. Prize medal for the 1st modern Olympic Games in Athens, 1896. Obv. Facing head of Zeus Olympios, holding Nike on globe; Nike holding a large olive branch. Rev. The Acropolis in Athens. 51.60 g. 50.00 mm. Opus: Jules Clément Chaplain. A little monogram on the reverse and the slightly bigger size than in official records suggest that this specimen is a later re-strike. First place winners were awarded a silver medal, an olive branch and a diploma. Those in second place were given a bronze/copper medal, a branch of laurel and a diploma. There was no award for third place.
