The use of these lead seals is attested in Southern Italy and especially in Sicily, acting as a 'receipt' for the payment of the 'ğizya', an annual tax that Muslims imposed on non-Muslims in order to freely profess their own religion and acquire the status of 'dhimmi' or protected.
