Octavian, Triumvir. AR Denarius, autumn 30 - summer 29 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Octavian, as Apollo, right. Rev. Rostral column ornamented with two anchors and six beaks of galleys, surmounted by heroic statue of Octavian, holding spear and parazonium; IMP-CAESAR across field. RIC I (2nd ed.) 271. 3.46 g. 20.5 mm. Scarce. Lovely toning with iridescent hues. Cleaning marks and banker's marks on both sides. Good F. This issue depicts the column decreed by the Senate in recognition of Octavian’s victory over Antony and Cleopatra at Actium. The monument stood on the Palatine Hill, before the temple of Apollo.
