Lot 264:
L. Sentius C.f. AR Denarius, 101 BC. Obv. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, ARG·PVB (AR ligate). Rev. Jupiter in quadriga right; below, K; in exergue, L·SENTI·C·F. Cr. 325/1b; B. (Sentia) 1; RRSC D123b. AR. 3.88 g. 20 mm. Well centred and nicely toned. Scratch on obverse, otherwise. about EF. The obverse legend says ARG PVB meaning that the issue was struck by metal owned by the Roman state. Noting that a particular coinage was struck by state-owned metal is not without precedent, and in fact it occurs on coins of eight different moneyers during the Republican period. However, it seems unnecessary: presumably all official coinage was made from metal owned by the Roman state, and its significance here is not readily apparent.
